Camp Pocono Ridge Specializes in New Campers!

All of our campers are special…But, First Time campers need a little bit more attention, a little more time to adjust and acclimate to their new home with a little bit more understanding..... Just until they “take-off” on their own, which they do! This process is an hour for some but days for others, which is one reason why we feel our session length makes for just the right amount of time. First, we take the time to introduce ourselves to our new family members even before they arrive at camp. We have developed a special sequence of correspondence and events to jump-start the acclimation process, facilitate feelings of security and support the individual camper.

The Welcome Pac

Just after registration, new campers receive a complementary care package filled with Pocono Ridge goodies, a camp survival kit of sorts, along with a welcome card from the entire camp family. This package is sent to excite new campers about their up-coming adventure and promote feelings of security in the idea that Camp Pocono Ridge was definitely the right choice!

The Pocono Ridge Pal

In the spring, new campers receive an email letter including the name, address, telephone number and email address (if available) of another new Pocono Ridge camper who is in the same grade/age and probably in the same group as your camper. We call this his/her “PRP” or “Pocono Ridge Pal.”

The intent is for the children to communicate with each other pre-season and develop a friendship they can take with them to camp, separate and in addition to any “home” friends that may be attending. This is an important process, but one where some campers need help in taking the initial introductory step, so we send a “fill in the blank” letter to get them started and ask our parents to take an interest by assisting their camper during the introduction phase. Once communication is established, campers are happier talking out any concerns they may have about “being alone” or making friends, with a peer person who understands and basically feels the same way.The “PRP” concept becomes even more successful when followed up with a plan to meet each other at camp during our New Camper Orientation, in June.

New Camper Orientation

New Camper Orientation gives both the parent and camper the opportunity to visit the camp, meet with the directors and key staff, ask lots of questions and develop a connection or at least familiarity with Camp Pocono Ridge.

Our counselor staff, during staff orientation, reviews the personal and medical files for every camper in their care so that they are better prepared to assist their campers to camp life, knowing special interests, parent expectations, dietary restrictions, etc. However, even with the best preparation sometimes counselors need extra help; this is where our Camp Mom becomes a terrific asset.

The
Camp Mom

The Camp Mom job description specifically allows the opportunity and time to listen and assist the individual camper without sacrifice to that child’s bunkmates.  She is able (and enjoys) giving what we call the “Ooo baby.” This is that special something, that little extra that a new camper might really need in the beginning to get them off to a good start. Whether it is time together, an ear to listen, more stamps or a politically correct hug, this special attention really works in securing a sense of safety for the individual, similar to that which one would receive at home.In addition, the Camp Mom keeps first time camper parents, "in the loop." She will call you to let you know if your camper is experiencing difficulty, offer insight, ask for parent’s tips/suggestions that only a parent knows and work with our parents to make the camper's experience the best it can possibly be. It's all about communication and working together.

Our Camp Mom’s success rate is 99.9%. Now, you may ask why not 100%, well a successful camp experience depends on the mindset of the child and parent, before camp starts. Positive thoughts lead to positive experiences. Parents who say, "I'll come pick you up...." might as well not even send their child to camp. It's a whammy on the camper's success. We recommend constant support and encouragement as they set off on this new and wonderful journey. Positive minds breed positive results, a much happier and confident camper, which leads to happy and confident parents. We will provide all the continued support from preliminary review of our camp material, throughout your child’s life, and as long as he/she wants it. We will answer as many telephone calls and questions necessary to review the clothing list, discuss camper concerns, address fears, provide tips, etc., all in an effort to provide campers and parents the ability to create a positive mental and emotional environment which is necessary for camper success.

This program, designed with “Welcome Pacs,” “PRP’s,” orientation opportunities and caring professional staff, is dedicated to easing all of our children through the acclimation process, year after year, but most especially for our “First Time” campers. It is our hope that your child comes to feel as returning campers do, apart of the wonder that is Camp Pocono Ridge, and with each and every return a stronger sense of safety and security from their home away from home.

Camp Pocono Ridge, where no one is a stranger!
