Camp Pocono Ridge provides campers with Leadership Intern Training (L.I.T.) programs within its regular elective program. Campers, of qualifying age, may elect to participate in various programs designed to teach children leadership techniques including team building skills, mentoring and coaching.
Our campers deserve the highest quality counselor staff possible. Through teaching course objectives and evaluating individual development, we believe we help youth realize their potential while developing quality leadership skills, and increasing qualified future staff candidates who are committed to Camp Pocono Ridge, its people and traditions.
The Camp Pocono Ridge L.I.T. course is specifically designed to produce a higher quality of camp counselor staff for our camp program from within our population. We believe this approach helps to secure staff that has a vested interest in the success of our program, and the positive experiences within the same program to share it with younger campers.
We start our program with basic training at age 14 and continue three seasons through their 16th summer. Once a camper reaches the age of 17 and has completed the 11th grade, they may apply for a Junior Counselor position on our staff. We do not hire outside staff under the age 18, without a year of college or the equivalent, so the only way to be a member of our staff before that time is to have completed our LIT courses.
Graduates from LIT are highly motivated, well practiced in camp policy, certified in a variety of areas including American Red Cross First Aid, C.P.R., and wilderness training. They are well versed in the needs of campers, socially, mentally, and emotionally, and the expectations of our administrators. We have helped them further their individual skills and desire to be a leader by challenging their own experiences and theories thru practical application under the supervision of our senior counselor and administrative staff. LIT’s enjoy themselves by learning and applying new, and finely tuned skills while passing on the traditions of our summer camp program. Graduates have reported themselves to be more independent, self assured and able to easily demonstrate leadership qualities in all aspects of their lives. All this training and education translates into camper success from the youngest to the oldest.
